Media Ownership

Media texts are profit motivated. Consider this in the light of TV news. What issues does this raise?
Firstly, media texts are definitely profit motivated in order to continue to publish and offer shows and news to their target audience. Generally, media companies who own a lot of money can be considered as a monopoly as they have dominated in the market. TV news is becoming more popular than newspapers because it’s more interactive and always has more of a variety therefore generates competition to who has the best show. Competition is healthy in media as it generates new innovative ideas in order to get massive profits.  The issues that may arise from this is that, the media will lose interest into what their target audience actually wants compared to making shows for profit which can be considered as selfish. In the end quality of the products would suffer.
Which media companies do you think could be accused of having too much power and control in our society?
There are many media companies who take small proportions of education, comedy and information in the market however the main controller of media is the government. Through wars, national or international news, or sporting events, the UK government ensure that media consumers of the news have access to this information. In this way, this is a benefit of having this much control in society however it can lead to bias information and possibly be quite unreliable. The population do complain that they have too much power as we don’t have much say when publishing information apart from voicing opinions through blogs etc.
